Welcome Back to the Art Room!
September 2015
Welcome back to the art room for the 2015–2016 school year! I’m excited to see returning students and to meet our new artists who are joining us for the first time. This space belongs to all of us, and we’ll be using it to explore, experiment, and make meaningful work together.
In the first few weeks, we focus on three things:

Getting to know the art room routines – where supplies live, how we set up and clean up, and how we take care of materials.

Reviewing expectations – how we use our voices, move safely, and respect each other’s ideas and artwork.

Jumping into creating – students will start with simple drawing and color activities so everyone can feel successful right away.
For student teachers doing their practicum, this is a key time to watch how structure supports creativity. You’ll see how routines are taught explicitly, how visual cues are used for transitions, and how choice is introduced gradually so students can handle more independence as the year goes on.
For families, you can support your child’s work in the art room by asking simple, open questions:
“What did you make in art today?”
“What materials did you use?”
“How did you choose your colors or shapes?”
This year, we’ll be building skills step by step—drawing, color, composition, and creative problem solving—while encouraging students to see themselves as real artists. I’m looking forward to a year of curiosity, effort, and growth in the art room.
